Not just a park in the city, but a kind of leisurely museum, with a scattering of Civil War forts, a cemetery and a 19th-century mill within its bounds.

We had a very pleasant walk four miles upstream from our hotel to another destination. We had been there a year before, but this was a more ambitious walk. The path is well maintained and attractiv…Full review by Q5017ZSstephenb

The park is lush and green! My sister's dog disturbed a wasp nest, so we were stung multiple times. The Ranger station had water bottles, patches, books, and prints for sale.Full review by wendysN8578SJ

We passed through a section of this on the way to the Zoo yesterday (separate review) and it is lovely, shady, quiet, lots of old stone structures, old expensive homes, etc.Full review by travelkitty50

Camping is not allowed anywhere in Rock Creek Park. Technically, the park is closed after dark. You can still drive through the park on several roads at all hours of course. IIRC, each of the parking lots at the various shelters say no parking after dark, but I'm not positive of that. The park is free of charge, unless you wish to reserve one of the picnic areas for a group. Not sure of their definition of "group" - we did it once years ago for a work group of about 35 people. I think you'd be fine with a family group smaller than 10 people or so.

Pierce Mill is a very nice spot. There is a decent amount of parking there, and nice facilities for a picnic. Including a large shelter with many picnic tables. From Pierce Mill you can walk up and down along the creek on what I would call the Main Rock Creek Trail, which is a bike path. I don't believe that there is nearby access to hiking trails through the woods from Pierce Mill. For actual trails, there is another parking lot somewhere near the intersection between Joyce Rd NW and Ross Dr NW. Not so great for a picnic, but nice access to a great trail. If you do a search on Rock Creek Park Grove in Google Maps, you will see many different spots. I've driven by many of them, each seems to have some picnic facility and all have access to bike paths or trails. I live in DC, so I just drive to spots that I've seen without knowing how to tell people how to get there. Use Waze or Google Maps, navigating Rock Creek in a car is hard unless you know it well. Have fun!

Are dogs allowed in the park?
