Ooops. I misread the question. The pope's palace was one of about ten areas we stopped and explored. The area I liked best was the Point du Gard with the Roman aqueduct, Les Baux de Provence with its Fortified village and the old stone quarry where they have a fantastic light show against the walls inside the quarry.

Not sure about which day but would get there as early as you can to avoid the mid morning tour groups.
