“Lilo & Stitch” brought in an impressive $183 million at the box office this weekend, while the eighth “Mission: Impossible” film earned a franchise-best $77 million opening. Altogether, Memorial Day 2025’s 4-day total cracked $328 million at the movies.

Few industries were spared and among those hardest hits was the film industry. Many productions were either delayed, suspended or even shelved entirely. Cinemas weren’t even allowed to operate in order to curb the spread of the virus.

Even accounting for the “leap year” nature of the just-ended season – 2024-2025 was a 53-week season while most seasons, including 2018-2019, are 52 weeks – the just-ended season would still be the new record-holder: The first 52 weeks of the most recent season grossed $1.85 billion.
