Donkey Kong is having a moment. This summer, not only did Mario’s original foe get his first theme park ride in the United States, but he’s also got Donkey Kong Bananza, his own mega game coming to Switch 2 later this week, and he might even be getting a movie sometime in the future.

Signs point to an animated film adaptation, which would fit perfectly with Nintendo’s current strategy.

In 1983, Universal sued Nintendo, claiming Donkey Kong infringed on its King Kong trademark. Nintendo’s attorney (and future board member,) Howard Lincoln, had to enlist the help of attorney John Kirby for his record of winning big cases, and it paid off big. Universal’s claims that Donkey Kong could be confused with King Kong fell on deaf ears.
