White smoke poured from the Sistine Chapel chimney Thursday afternoon, signaling a new pope has been elected. The white smoke first appeared at about 12:08 p.m. The news comes just over 24 hours after the doors to the chapel closed for the conclave to begin the voting process.

The smoke signal means the winner secured at least 89 votes of the 133 cardinals participating in the conclave to elect a successor to Pope Francis.

The plume of dark smoke indicates that the 133 cardinal electors sequestered inside the chapel have not reached the required two-thirds majority.
