A new prescribed burn, called 2026 Howard Mill Understory, was initiated today at 7:56 a.m. in in Lake County, California. The prescribed fire has been burning on federal land managed by the United States Forest Service for eight hours.

Evacuations have been downgraded in Lake County for a wind-driven fire that burned about 2,700 acres near the Lake and Colusa county line, officials say. Detectives say forensic genetic genealogy has helped them identify remains found in Lake County, Colorado more than 50 years ago.

The Lake County Fire and Rescue Department hosted a reopening and new fire engine “push back” ceremony on January 23rd, at the recently renovated fire station located at 11630 Lakeshore Drive, Clermont.
