State regulators have ordered a former Colorado gold mine where a tour guide was killed and a group of tourists was trapped for hours after an elevator accident to remain closed while its operations are reviewed.

Colorado officials ordered the Mollie Kathleen Gold Mine to cease and desist operations on Wednesday about a week after a tour guide was killed and 23 people trapped underground when an elevator malfunctioned.

TELLER COUNTY, Colo. (KKTV) - A cease and desist letter was sent to a Colorado gold mine following the death of one of their employees.

A cease and desist letter was sent to the owners of Colorado's Mollie Kathleen Gold Mine a deadly elevator malfunction trapped visitors for hours forcing a rescue where one person died.

The elevator was descending into the Mollie Kathleen Gold Mine near the town of Cripple Creek, and the twelve who were rescued were about 1,000 feet below ground.

A tour guide for the Mollie Kathleen Gold Mine Tour in Colorado was identified as the lone death following an elevator mishap that trapped 23 others who were rescued.

The incident occurred at the Mollie Kathleen Gold Mine, a tourist site near Cripple Creek. According to Teller County Sheriff Jason Mikesell, the elevator was descending into the mine when it suffered a mechanical issue about 500 feet below the surface.

The Colorado Division of Reclamation, Mining and Safety sent a cease and desist letter to the owners of the Mollie Kathleen Gold Mine in Cripple Creek after last week's tour guide death.
