Hundreds gathered on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard in Tyler on Saturday morning to celebrate freedom, heritage, and resilience during the city’s annual Juneteenth parade.

On and around June 19, residents across South Mississippi will come together to celebrate Juneteenth, a day marked to commemorate the freeing of the last U.S. slaves in Galveston, Texas in 1865. Here’s when and where you can celebrate: Know of an event you believe should be added to this list?

The event has grown for Longview, and the city is offering its citizens a range of ways to celebrate across a month of festivities.

The sounds of soul, R&B, jazz and reggae could be heard Saturday afternoon around the SteelStacks complex, as people gathered to enjoy a Juneteenth festival. Juneteenth Lehigh Valley, an organization honoring the holiday that memorializes the day Black enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, were freed in 1865, put on the festival celebrating freedom.

Across Minnesota and the entire country, Juneteenth will be celebrated with art, food, and community. Juneteenth — sometimes called Freedom Day or Emancipation Day — became an official Minnesota state holiday in 2023,
