Turns out, the teacher won “much more than some gas money,” lottery officials said. After scratching two tickets, the teacher scratched a third: a $10 The Shore Thing ticket, lottery officials said. The player soon learned they had won the game’s top prize of $500,000.
The lucky teacher, who received several scratch-offs from grateful parents, had left the tickets in their car, forgotten until a recent July morning.
It started as a thank you. It ended in a half-million-dollar lottery prize for one unsuspecting New Jersey teacher.

However, one ticket sold in New Jersey won a prize of $40,000 for matching four of the five white balls and the gold Mega ball. The New Jersey Lottery said that prize is normally $10,000 but it was boosted to $40,000 because of the 4X multiplier. The lucky ticket was sold at Mike’s Deli on Oak Hill Road in Red Bank, lottery officials said.
