Illinois, Pritzker

Rep. Brandon Gill dredged up the eight-year-old tweet from Pritzker during a heated House Oversight Committee hearing with sanctuary state governors.
House Oversight Chair James Comer requested in April that these Democratic governors testify, claiming that the "Trump administration is taking decisive action to deport criminal illegal aliens from our nation, but reckless sanctuary states like Illinois, Minnesota, and New York are actively seeking to obstruct federal immigration enforcement."
Pritzker provided the committee with a five-page opening statement, in which he’ll highlight the state’s response to the migrant crisis and tout that crime is down in Illinois, in an effort to tackle the unproven rhetoric that immigrants who lack legal status are a major source of violence.
Though he wrote “both sides are to blame” for the nation’s immigration issues, Pritzker wrote “some border state governors and mayors” chose to “treat people as pawns.” Pritzker and Texas Republican Gov. Greg Abbott frequently butted heads during the migrant surge.
As Republican lawmakers grilled Democratic governors, Pritzker defended Illinois’ sanctuary policies and criticized President Donald Trump’s policies.
The governor’s appearance is the latest flashpoint in Illinois’ ongoing battle with the GOP-controlled U.S House and the Trump administration, which is attempting to strip self-proclaimed sanctuary cities of all federal funding.
Amid unrest in California, Republicans plan to press the governors of other blue states on their immigration policies, including on limiting cooperation with federal enforcement efforts.
