While the future home for Sundance, the iconic indie film festival actor Robert Redford helped create, remains up for debate, there’s no argument about the 2025 lineup in Utah. It’s dynamite, and includes a smattering of films with Bay Area ties.
The City of Cincinnati put $2.5 million upfront to secure a deal, with at least $2.5 million more promised if the Queen City is selected as the host. The council estimated that Sundance coming to Cincinnati would be an investment for the future that would potentially bring in at least $120 million per year for a decade.
Sundance’s leadership speaks frankly about how the organization will forge ahead in an anxious moment for the industry, from the rise of AI to the festival’s possible move out of Utah: “Change is a good thing.
However, one independent sales exec and Sundance regular told us: “The mood is very bad. L.A. is like a ghost town. There is sure to be a knock on impact on Sundance. Those whose houses were in the line of the fires aren’t going to Park City, I’m sure. Everything is on hold in terms of financing. There is paralysis.”
And as organizers have done since September, when three finalist host cities were announced (Boulder, Colorado; Cincinatti, Ohio; and a joint Salt Lake City/Park City bid), Eugene Hernandez declined to give any hint of an answer. "The answer is 'no, not yet,'" he said.
