Stonewall outside of New York City was news, but it was not page one with a banner headline. Like many seminal events, the moment — in the moment — was not universally seen as momentous. That Stonewall would become the exploding powder keg for the gay rights movement was not apparent on June 28, 1969, for many people. It was not for me.
