“Karate Kid: Legends” brought back Macchio’s Daniel and Jackie Chan’s Mr. Han to train kung fu prodigy Li (Ben Wang) to fight in a major tournament in New York. “Cobra Kai” took place largely in The Valley of Southern California which had many fans worried that there would be no connection between the new film and the show they loved.

Cobra Kai just wrapped up its six-season run on Netflix, but Karate Kid: Legends takes place a few years after the events of the series.

Director Jonathan Entwistle told the New York Post that Johnny’s cameo in Karate Kid: Legends was always planned. “I think once we knew that Cobra Kai was coming to an end, it was just a nice moment to round out that period for the fans,” he said. “It was just very nice to just give everybody a moment to round that out.”
