That was all due to a serious crash in a giant slalom race on Nov. 30 in Killington, Vermont, where something punctured her in the side — still a mystery — and caused severe trauma to her oblique muscles.

On Nov. 30, Shiffrin crashed in a giant slalom run in Killington, Vermont, while bidding to become the first Alpine skier to reach 100 World Cup victories. She tumbled over and sustained a puncture wound seven centimeters deep into the right side of her abdomen, tearing into her external and internal oblique muscles.

Three-time Olympic medalist Mikaela Shiffrin will return to alpine skiing competition next week, the American star announced Thursday on the “Today” show.
