Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy says a new software update prevented a third radar outage over the last two weeks at New Jersey's busy Newark airport when a telecommunications line failed again over the weekend.

Radar screens at New Jersey's Newark Liberty International Airport went black again early Friday morning. The outage happened at 3:55 a.m. and lasted about 90 seconds, the Federal Aviation Administration said.

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy plans to reduce the number of flights in and out of Newark Liberty International Airport for the "next several weeks."

The city of Newark will install radar detection equipment at a downtown intersection later this year to boost traffic efficiency and safety.

We have to fix this, because what you see in Newark will happen in other places across the country,” a top federal official said.
