Worldcoin, a startup co-founded by OpenAI Chief Executive Officer Sam Altman, announced a new name and introduced the latest version of its eyeball-scanning Orb at an event in San Francisco on Thursday.

Worldcoin, the identity and cryptocurrency venture co-founded by Sam Altman, is rebranding itself as World (and World Network) to reflect what it says is a broader mission. Why it matters: World is pitching its technologies as key to helping distinguish bots from humans in an increasingly AI-dominated society.

The project was launched last July. It aims to scan the irises of all people to create a global ID for them. This global ID will be used to differentiate real humans from AI chatbots.
