I liked Barba, but comparing him to Carisi in any way is completely unfair. Barba was a phenom at his job who had been there for years. He was a seasoned pro, and it showed in his courtroom scenes. Carisi is a novice and something we’ve never seen in the show before—an SVU detective who has aspirations of being DA.

You have the bronx south kid who still has not forgotten where he comes from, and also the sophisticated attorney who hangs out with high class people who has to use the letter and spirit of the law, and reconcile with his own principles.

I think the way they wrote him off, and stuff that comes later (no spoilers) is trash, and I don’t know why the writers made the choices they did. Hopefully he shows up before SVU ends, whenever that happens.
