Today in Black Women’s History – April 13th Edna Lewis was born on April 13, 1916 in Freetown, Virginia. She was an author, chef, teacher and advocate for Southern cuisine. Her hometown is a farming community founded by free African Americans after the Civil War. Lewis grew up on a farm and learned to cook from her mother and grandmother, who taught her traditional Southern recipes and techniques. She began her culinary career in New York City, where she worked at several restaurants before open
