Mary Eliza Mahoney was the first Black woman to complete nurse's training in 1879. She was also one of the first Black members of the American Nurses Association, and has been credited as one of the first women to register to vote in Boston following the ratification of the 19th Amendment in 1920. Meet Mary Eliza Mahoney, the first African American licensed nurse. Eliza always knew what she wanted to be when she grew up and began working towards that goal at the New England Hospital for Women and Children. While at the hospital, she worked for 15 years in a variety of roles, holding positions as janitor, cook, and washer woman as well as nurse’s aide, enabling her to learn a great deal about the nursing profession.
