In 1953, the Oklahoma State Legislature proclaimed June 29th as Maria Tallchief Day. Born in Fairfax, Oklahoma in 1925, Maria Tallchief grew up to become America’s first prima ballerina. Her father was a member of the Osage Nation. Throughout her career, many tried to persuade Tallchief to change her last name, but she refused. Tallchief continued to advocate for opportunities for Native Americans until her death in 2013. #HistoryMonday | Smithsonian Channel
