Mendelssohn’s The Hebrides overture was inspired by his 1829 journey to Fingal’s Cave in Scotland, whose echoing sound inspired the opening bars of the new composition. Rather than writing a large work, Mendelssohn captured the memory of the cavern in a single orchestral movement.
