For about 50 years, New Zealand's Takahe was believed to be extinct, until a small population was rediscovered in Fiordland in 1948. Since then, massive conservation efforts have helped bring them back from the brink, and today their population is around 500! Part of those efforts included relocating small groups to remote, predator-free islands. That's where I saw this one. It's technically "wild" - it roams freely, but unless it learns to swim long distances, it's not leaving the island anytim
