One of the oldest buildings in Old Sacramento and one of the first coffee businesses in Sacramento was the Star Coffee and Spice Mills owned by Nathaniel Dingley. Dingley, a tradesman from Boston, came to California in 1850 for the Gold Rush. He bought the failed Star Mill coffee business near Front and I Streets at public auction but in 1852, the coffee business burned in the Great Conflagration on November 2nd along with 80 percent of the buildings in Sacramento. The Sacramento History Museum will be closed May 12th-18th for the World’s Strongest Man competition occurring in Old Sacramento State Historic Park, which fully surrounds our museum.
