Doing so takes the slack/bounce out of the chain and delivers more force on the padlock. Either the fork slid OVER the shackle or the pike slid IN the shackle can be used. I typically prefer this method, though both can have their place. If you have a heavy-duty / "real" brand lock, this technique may be more difficult and may not work. O
